Chandler Christian Church Sermon Notes

August 3-4, 2002                    IF JESUS HAD A PALM PILOT…                       John 9:4, Selected

THE CALENDAR OF JESUS!

*** John 9:4 “All of us must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent me, because there is little time left before the night falls and all work comes to an end.”  [New Living Translation]

TIME IS PRECIOUS – WE CAN MANAGE IT, BUT WE CAN’T MULTIPLY IT!

JESUS TELLS US TO MANAGE OUR TIME:

1. BY RESTING OUR BODIES!

*** Mark 2:27 “Then Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”  [New International Verson]

*** Exodus 20:8-11 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”  [NIV]

*** Mark 6:31 “But so many people were coming and going that Jesus and the apostles did not even have a chance to eat. Then Jesus said, "Let's go to a place where we can be alone and get some rest."  [Contemporary English Version]

*** Matthew 11:28-29 “Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls.”  [NLT]

JESUS:

Ø       TAUGHT REST!

Ø       ENCOURAGED REST!

Ø       MODELED REST!

“IF YOU’RE BURNING THE CANDLE AT BOTH ENDS

YOU’RE NOT AS BRIGHT AS YOU THINK YOU ARE!”

THREE SIMPLE STEPS TO RESTING YOUR BODY:

Ø       DISCOVER WHAT MAKES YOU RELAX!

Ø       LIMIT RELAXATION THIEVES!

Ø       SCHEDULE RELAXATION TIME!

2. BY RECHARGING OUR SPIRITS!

*** Matthew 9:36 “Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd.”

[New American Standard Bible]

HOW CAN WE USE OUR TIME TO RECHARGE OUR SPIRITS?

A. MAKE TIME FOR FAMILY!

*** Mark 5:19 “Jesus…said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."  [NIV]

JESUS LOVED FAMILY!

*** 1 Tim. 5:8 “People who don't take care of their relatives, and especially their own families, have given up their faith. They are worse than someone who doesn't have faith in the Lord.”  [CEV]

*** Eccles. 9:9 “Life is short, and you love your wife, so enjoy being with her. This is what you are supposed to do as you struggle through life on this earth.”  [CEV]

B. MAKE TIME FOR FRIENDS!

*** Luke 16:9 “I tell you, use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. In this way, your generosity stores up a reward for you in heaven.”  [NLT]

JESUS LOVED PEOPLE!

*** John 15:13-15 “This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you.  I'm no longer calling you servants…. No, I've named you friends….” [The Message]

“FRIENDSHIP DOUBLES OUR JOY AND DIVIDES OUR SORROWS.”

C. MAKE TIME FOR MINISTRY!

*** Matthew 20:26 “Whoever wants to become great among you must serve the rest of you….”  [NCV]

*** Matthew 20:28 “Your attitude must be like my own, for I, the Messiah, did not come to be served, but to serve….”  [Living]

JESUS LOVED SERVING!

3. BY REFOCUSING OUR SOULS!

*** Mark 1:35 “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”  [NIV]

*** Luke 5:15-16 “News about Jesus kept spreading. Large crowds came to listen to him teach and to be healed of their diseases. But Jesus would often go to some place where he could be alone and pray.” [Contemporary English Version]

*** Hebrews 10:25 “You should not stay away from the church meetings, as some are doing, but you should meet together and encourage each other. Do this even more as you see the day coming.”  [NCV]

“Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time….”

Ephesians. 5:15-16  [NASB]
