October 20-21, 2001                                      MONEY WISE!                               Selected Proverbs

MAKING THE MOST OF WHAT YOU HAVE!

Ë IT’S NOT HOW MUCH BUT

HOW YOU MANAGE YOUR MONEY THAT MATTERS!

*** Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”  [NIV]

*** 1 Cor. 4:2 “Now, a person who is put in charge as a manager must be faithful.”

 [New Living Translation]

SIX WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT YOU HAVE!

1. BY ESTABLISHING A REALISTIC BUDGET!

*** Proverbs 27:23-24 “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.”  [New International Version]

***. Proverbs 27:24 “…so watch your business interests closely.”  [Living Bible]

*** Luke 16:10 “Whoever can be trusted with a little can also be trusted with a lot, and whoever is dishonest with a little is dishonest with a lot.” [New Century Version]

*** Proverbs 14:15 “…The wise think about what they do.”  [NCV]

Ë Budgeting is the thing to do – of that I’m most emphatic!

I’m just as broke as I ever was, but now I’m systematic!”

2. BY GIVING TO GOD FIRST!

*** Proverbs 3:9-10 “Honor the Lord by giving him the first part of all your income, and he will fill your barns with wheat and barley and overflow your wine vats with the finest wines.” [LB]

*** Leviticus 27:30 “A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.”  [NIV]

Ë TITHING IS NOT A FINANCIAL ISSUE, IT’S A FAITH ISSUE!

*** Deut. 14:23 “The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives.”  [Living]

3. BY LIVING ON LESS THAN YOU MAKE!

*** Proverbs 13:7 “One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.”  [NIV]

Ë TO FOLLOW THIS RULE WE MUST:

A. BE REALISTIC!

B. BE DISCIPLINED!

*** Pr. 13:18 “He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame….” [NIV]

Ë THE PAIN OF THE PAYMENTS ALWAYS EXCEDES THE PLEASURE OF THE PURCHASE!

*** Proverbs 23:4 “Do not wear yourself out getting rich. Be smart enough to stop.”  [God’s Word to the Nations]

C. BE CONTENT!

*** Proverbs 14:30 “It's healthy to be content, but envy can eat you up.”

 [Contemporary English Version]

Ë  IT’S NOT ABOUT CONTENTS BUT CONTENTMENT!

*** Proverbs 28:11 “A rich man may be wise in his own eyes, but a poor man who has discernment sees through him.”  [NIV]

4. BY GETTING OUT OF DEBT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE!

*** Proverbs 22:7 “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”  [NIV]

Ë ”The average American Christian give 2.8% of their income to Church, while paying on average of 9.8% of their income in interest!”        Larry Burkett

5. BY SAVING SOME AMOUNT REGULARILY!

*** Proverbs 21:20 “The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets.” [LB]

6. BY INVESTING WISELY FOR THE LONG TERM!

*** Proverbs 13:11 “Money that comes easily disappears quickly, but money that is gathered little by little will grow.”  [NCV]

*** Proverbs 28:20 “The trustworthy will get a rich reward. But the person who wants to get rich quick will only get into trouble.”  [NLT]

*** Proverbs 21:5 “Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.”  [NLT]

*** Proverbs 31:16 “She picks out a field and buys it. She plants a vineyard from the profits she has earned.”  [GW]

*** Matthew 25:27 “You could have at least put my money in the bank, so that I could have earned interest on it."  [CEV]

*** Proverbs 17:16 “Of what use is money in the hand of a fool, since he has no desire to get wisdom?”   [NIV]

Ë IF WE WILL MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT WE HAVE,

WE WILL BE MONEY WISE!
